When you begin a home based business, it's sometimes helpful to have "something else" to offer your prospects. When I encounter someone that isn't interested in my main business, I like to tell them about my Network Marketing Jerky company. It's inexpensive, only 12 dollars per month, and the product, the jerky, is great. I call the page I have for it - Gift Jerky.

One reason why this sometimes appeals to people: they like the company they are with, but want to add something extra. I don't use this company when I call my leads, at least not as my main business. I usually tell people about this in other ways. I had someone come out and repair my computer this week. As he was getting ready to leave, I gave him a bag of great tasting jerky. He might not ever join the business, but there is a good chance he might start buying jerky from me. That's fine, too.

Linking - Begin A Home Based Business

Linking for SEO is important when you begin a home based business. I have one domain that I am currently trying to get to the top of Google for several search terms. The domain is GiftJerky.com. It isn't even a full site, just one page that I have on my PearsonConnection.com site. I forward that domain to it.

I link a couple of Veretekk lead generation systems to it. These systems are made up of web pages that can be totally configured for whatever keyword phrases you want.

Right now, I am in the top 100 sites under these Google searches: Jerky(#61 of 7.95 million), Beef Jerky(#83 of 2.21 million), Turkey Jerky(#29 of 218,000) and Buffalo Jerky(#27 of 82,000).

Considering that this is free advertising, that's not too bad. Plus, I'm climbing. That GiftJerky.com page has two links on it. The first links to the Jerky Sales portion of my Jerky Direct site, the second goes to the business opportunity. Since I cracked the top 100 of those searches, my sales have been climbing and people have been joining my business.

Not bad for free.

I created this blog to help people learn how to begin a home based business. For my own business, I generate leads using the Veretekk lead generation system. The best thing about Veretekk is all the great training you get. On Christmas Eve, one of our best trainers, John Vrouletis passed away from colon cancer.

John taught a class about generating leads. This was by far my favorite class and is the one that has helped me the most. I have a podcast, Get Great Leads Today. Back in September, I included one of John's classes in my third podcast. I recently rebroadcast that class. It is episode #18. Begin A Home Based Business And A Blog!

When you begin a home based business, especially one primarily based on the internet, it's hard to get your info in front of people at the beginning. Ultimately the best way to get your stuff seen, is with SEO, search engine optimization.

SEO might seem like a long process, but it's well worth it. One way to help get yourself ranked on Google, is to use a blog, like this one. Google search engine spiders love blogs because there is always new content. That is if you post every day. Look, it might seem like a hassle posting everyday, but no matter what you do, the next month is still going to go by. Don't wait 30 days only to wish that you had 30 posts for people to look at.

If you aren't sure what you would blog about, take a look at your business. You could blog about the products. Take a different product every day and write about it. Or write about the benefits of the business.

There are just two things to remember about blogs. Post as often as you can, at leas 3-4 times per week. Everyday is better. 2-3 times per day is best. The second thing to remember, is to always use original content. Don't go copy and paste from any other site. Google can tell, and your site will never get ranked.

SEO Is Important When You Begin A Home Based Business

Today I want to talk SEO. Search engine optimization. More specifically let's talk back links. Links to your website help improve your search engine positioning. This is especially important if the back links are relevant to what your site is about.

Check this out. I searched Google today for the term "mlm lead generation". My site RoboticLeads.com is on page 1 in the 6th position. That is a page that I created to help get people interested in getting a Veretekk lead generation system. I've gotten it onto page 1 using a number of techniques. Press releases, RSS feeds, and I set up the title tag and meta tags correctly. But I think it's the back links that are propelling that site to the top of Google. It's still climbing. I was in 7th place a few days ago.

I create back links for that site using three techniques. The first, is my Veretekk system. My username is RoboticLeads, so that is in all 43 website addresses. All 43 sites are optimized to be about mlm lead generation and they all link back to my RoboticLeads.com page.

The second method of creating links, is classified ad posts. I have my own classified ad site and I've posted about 100 ads, all linking to my site. They are all unique, so there is no duplication of content.

I also create a ton of pages, about 50, all aiming at my site and all linked together. I use my Free Page website to do this and you can too.

Finally, I blast an ad out to about 2 Billion sites across the internet using my Leadsomatic site. Each of these ads has a link to RoboticLeads.com.

I'm getting calls daily from people looking for help with their business. It's working for me, it can work for you.

When you begin a home based business, it's easy to start spending money like crazy. However, there are ways to make your empire seem larger than it is, without spending a ton.

Those are all websites of mine. Or rather, those are all domains that I have forwarded to different pages of the same website. PearsonConnection.com is the actual website. The other three are just pages on that site. I picked up domain names for the other three so that I could tell people the name of the page over the phone without having to give a long web address.

45 bucks a year gets me the whole website, plus about 36 dollars for the domains. However, if you take a look at the post that I did about sub-domains, I get 90 sub-domains with each domain that I get. I can use those for a ton of things. So for my 36 dollars, I actually get 364 domains. That's a pretty good value. I can forward those all to various websites for all kinds of search engine optimization.

So, while I have 1 website, it looks like I have 4. I can optimize each of those for a different keyword phrase for the search engines. That's extremely useful. And frugal.

A couple of weeks ago I was talking about what to do when you call your leads. I mentioned that I like to send my prospects to watch a couple of videos on my main business site. Well, I've come up with a new site that I send my prospects to first. If they have any interest, I then send them to my main site.

When you bring someone into your downline, when they are ready to begin a home based business, it's important to get them plugged into whatever training your company has. You want this person to have immediate success, and the best way to do that is through training.

My main business has training, and I like to get people into that as soon as possible. Live training meetings, training calls, whatever you have, get your new recruit into it. The company I use to generate leads for my business, Veretekk, has tons of great, free training that covers much more than just lead generation. It covers search engine optimization ( a class I'll be attending myself tonight, html and even a business writing class.

Training is important, because the person that is new to your business needs to see that what you do is duplicatable, that they can do what you do. Make sure you help them out.

At the start, when you first begin a home based business, you might be a little uncomfortable just calling up your leads and trying to sell them on your business. To be honest, I don't much like doing that. I'm not a very good salesman. I know my companies and I know the products and services. I also know the pay plans well enough to explain them.

However, I like to send the prospect to a website first and then talk to them about the company. That way, they have a better idea about what I'm offering, plus they'll know what questions to ask. That way I just have to answer questions which is easier then selling. I said companies plural in the first paragraph because I have three. I like to have options when I talk to people.

I have a great main business. I belong to Pre-Paid Legal. We offer legal protection for your family which is becoming a necessity with everyone suing each other now days. Plus, we offer Identity Theft protection which everyone needs. When I call my leads and talk to them, I'm looking to present Pre-Paid Legal. I like to send them to the website where they can watch a series of 3 short 5 minute vidoes. All they are looking at is a 15 minute time commitment which doesn't scare them off.

I give people this domain - GoodLegalPlan.com. It's easy to give over the phone. I have just forwarded that domain to my main Pre-Paid Legal website. I tell the people that they should just watch the Family Legal Service Plans video first, followed by the Identity Theft Shield Video. They should finish up with the Business Opportunity video. The links for the videos are in that order, so it's easy for people to figure out what to watch. If they happen to be commercial drivers or insurance or financial professionals, I have links there for them, also.

My secondary business is actually vital to my main business. I use Veretekk to generate leads for my main business. I market this one of two ways. One is simple search engine optimization and positioning. I use another domain - RoboticLeads.com that I've managed to get up on the search engines for a couple of searches. People have been finding this one and are actually calling me for information. That domain is forwarded to a page on my PearsonConnection.com website. It gives a pretty good description of what Veretekk is.

My main affiliate Veretekk site is here. We now have a great little audio file that plays when people go to sign up, explaining how to go about it.

My final company is a fun one. I belong to Jerky Direct. That's my main affiliate site where people can go for information. However, I don't send people directly there. I like to use another of my domains - GiftJerky.com. This is another page on my PearsonConnection.com site. Because some people that I talk to about Jerky Direct are only interested in the great tasting beef jerky and not the sweet little 12 dollar business opportunity, I send them to GiftJerky.com. Here they are presented with two cute little options. There is a picture of a shocked looking cow where you can click to go buy jerky. There is also a piggy bank that will take you to the newly remodeled business opportunity page. That way I don't scare off the retail customers. Not everyone is interested in network marketing. Which is ok, too.

I get a pretty nice check each month from Jerky Direct and I don't even push the company very hard. I occasionally mention it in my blogs, such as this one. I also hand it out when I can. If I have someone come to my house to fix something, I always give them a bag of jerky with a card attached with the name of the website. I occasionally take a couple of bags to work with me and leave them in the break room with some cards paper clipped to the bags.

I you are uncomfortable being the entire presentation, you need to get a site where you can send people. This can be as easy as sending them to your main affiliate site if there is a video they can watch, or you can also send them to a "sizzle call". Most companies have something like this. If your company doesn't, you could get together with your team and get a number where you have a message, and you could split the costs with the team.

If your team isn't helping you build your business, maybe you should join mine.

This is the third in a three part series about calling your prospects when you begin a home based business. Today I'm going to talk about my follow-up phone call that I make after I send them to my main website to watch a couple of videos. Remember, when I originally talk to the prospect I ask them when they are going to have a chance to watch the videos, so I get a commitment from them to actually watch them. They know I'm going to be following up.

Before I actually make the follow-up call, I go ahead and call someone from my own upline to make sure they are available for a conference call. I've got a few people I can call. I like them to be ready in case my prospect is interested.

The follow-up phone call goes something like this (I'm going to call the prospect Mike):

"Hi Mike, it's Dave Pearson in Salt Lake City, Utah...Great videos on the website, weren't they?"

I'm going to assume that he watched the videos. He'll let me know if he didn't and if he didn't and doesn't have a great excuse, he's also letting me know he's not interested. I'll try to get a commitment out of him again to watch the videos and I'll call him back again, but I don't have high hopes. That's ok, though, because the type of person that I'm looking for in my business is someone that's actively looking for a business and is willing to check everything out. He's excited to watch the videos.

After Mike responds, I'll ask..."What did you like best about what you saw?"

I listen to Mike, here, and then expand a little on what he said.

"I like that about it too." Then I expand a little bit right here, personalizing it depending on what he said. "I spend so much time on the internet that I really like the Identity Theft Protection." Or..."I really like the flexibility it gives me to make some extra money part time after I get home from my main job. Or..."This was the first time I've ever had a lawyer prepare a will for me, and the fact that it was free was really great."

The prospect has found something he likes about what I'm offering, and I want to reinforce his judgement, but it has to be real. Which it always is because I love the service that I offer, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten involved. I would have joined a different company. You should feel the same way about the company that you've joined, so the reinforcement should be easy.

Now, here is where I like to involve my upline. If we've gotten this far, then the prospect is either interested or not. If he's not, he'll tell me. If he's watched the videos and is still interested, I'll follow up with something like this:

"Hey, Mike, I'd like to three-way in a member of my upline. He's one of the guys that will be helping you build your business. Is that alright with you?"

I like to point out that people will be helping the prospect with his business, he won't be doing it alone. Also, I'm showing him how he will be able to do what I do. He'll be able to replicate my efforts and bring in members of the upline, also.

If he says yes, I then three-way in the upline guy. That's why I gave him a heads up before starting the call. I then just have to introduce the two and basically step aside and let the experienced salesman go to work.

If he says no, he's not really ready to talk to the upline, that's ok, too. I know he's at least a little interested or he would have told me no when I asked about the videos. I then ask him what he has questions about, and respond to those. This is why you need to be an expert on your company. It's more important that you know your company and products or services inside and out, then it is to be a great salesman. Just answer Mike's questions.

When you begin a home based business, especially a network marketing home based business opportunity, you need to talk to people. One of the most effective ways of reaching people is to generate leads and call them. I use the Veretekk lead generation system to generate prospects for my main business. When a lead is generated I get an email telling me when that person used my system and what page they used. When the lead uses one of my lead generation web pages he is exposed to my name and then begins receiving a series of emails over the next few days that all have my name on them.

When I call my prospects, my main goal is to expose them to my primary business. By paying attention to what they say, I can take the conversation onto one of two paths. I use a script, which keeps me focused. I'm not afraid to veer off of it, but I like to keep it handy so I know where I'm going. Keep in mind that the leads I generate are actually network marketers, so I'm not cold calling someone who doesn't believe in the business. Here is the general form of one of my calls:

I start off by introducing myself. "Hi, this is Dave Pearson in Salt Lake City, Utah, you probably recognize my name from the internet."

I like to pause here and give them a chance to respond. Because my name is on the website they used and the email they received to verify their email address, it's common for them to recognize my name. Even if they don't, in my next sentence I'm informing them of how they should know me.

"You signed up to use my Blastomatic ad blaster today and I just wanted to let you know that there's a real person behind the technology and I have several other online marketing tools that you're more than welcome to use for free."

Here is where I need to pay attention to what they say. If they really liked the tool that they used and seem interested in the other free tools, I'll follow that path. While we're on the phone together I'll get them signed up for a free Veretekk system and talk them through the basics. Here is why this is good for me. The first page they see when they log into the system, is a page mentioning my main business. See, even if we aren't focusing on it, they are still exposed to it. I mention that if they ever upgrade, and they give away free systems to other people, those people would be exposed to their business. Very enticing. I then show them how to get into the training, so that they learn how the system will help them.

However, if I get the feeling that this isn't the time to sign them with Veretekk, I continue on with my script.

"I wanted to ask you a quick question, would that be OK?

They almost always say yes. If not, I thank them and hang up.

"Well, what if I could show you, for real, how to easily add an extra couple thousand dollars to your monthly income, and it wouldn't interfere at all with anything you're doing right now, would that be worth about 10 minutes of your time?"

They say yes or no. No and I'm gone.

"Great, grab a pen & paper - - I need to give you some quick information. Ok, write down this website address: GoodLegalPlan.com. The website has a couple of short videos that you can watch anytime."

"Let me also give you my phone number. My direct line is 1-801-281-0571. I'll also send you this information by email. Whats the best email address to use for you?"

"Ok, let's trade calls later today/tonight (or tomorrow) -- I'll fill in the blanks and answer any questions you might have, not to sell or pressure you, just to answer your questions, OK?

"And when do you think you'll have time to visit the website and watch the videos?"

"Ok, great, I'll talk to you later, then."

And I hang up then. I don't want to get into a big conversation with them. I have more people to call.

Let's talk about what to do with your leads once you get them. Like I talked about in my last post, I prefer to generate my own. It's cheaper, I know where they come from because I generate them myself, and I think they are more open to what I have to offer. Ok, once I have some leads, the best thing to do is sit down, pick up the phone and call them. I don't like to email them because it's just to easy to delete the email. It's what I do with my junk mail I receive. When I started, I was very hesitant to pick up the phone. I'm not into rejection any more then the next guy, but there really isn't any other way to build your network marketing business. I get quite a few phone calls from people that have found my info on the internet, but that's a really slow way to build your organization.

I prefer not to do an entire sales pitch by myself. I like to send the prospect to watch a series of videos. We have a saying: Be the messenger, not the message. My company has given me a great website to use. It's slightly customizable, in that I can choose which topics I want covered there, but not fully customizable for the search engines. So I have to send people there myself. The address of the site is http://prepaidlegal.com/hub/davidpearson. That's a bit long and awkward to give out over the phone, so I bought myself a shorter domain. Because my company offers legal services, I chose one to go with that. It's GoodLegalPlan.com. I forward the domain to my main site.

You have to do the work yourself. Remember: it's your business, nobody's going to work it for you.

Now that you've made the decision to begin a home based business, chosen and studied your company, what do you do? You need to start talking to people. However, I'm not very good at just walking up to somebody I see on the street and talking about my main business. I prefer to call people on the phone.

However, I don't like to just call anybody. I don't like to call people that don't want to hear what I have to say. That's what happens when you buy leads and then try calling them. See, those leads aren't actually people that are interested in network marketing. They are generally just people that have filled out some kind of survey. If it's an online survey, they were probably trying to win something, like an Ipod. There was a little box that they had to check to continue and submit their form that most likely asked if they were interested in home business. These people checked that without even reading it. And became a survey lead.

Now, that lead was then sold to a bunch of people, who promptly called the person that barely remembered filling out the survey. They get unhappy. Also, that lead is sold to several other companies that resell the lead to bunches of people, who all think they are the first person to call this lead. Now the lead gets angry when someone calls. Finally, you come along and pay anywhere from 1 dollar to 4 dollars for that lead. You call, the lead freaks out and tells you where to go and to put them on the do not call list. Not exactly money well spent.

I prefer to generate my own leads. I know where they come from and I know that they are interested in network marketing. I use Veretekk to generate my leads. First off, Veretekk is free to start. You get 22 lead generating websites that include such things as an ad blaster that blasts ads to 12 million classified ad and FFA sites. and a classified ad site that's the oldest and largest free classified ad site on the internet. In other words, I get a bunch of free tools that appeal to network marketers.

You also get 20 free SEO websites that will improve the search engine positioning of your other websites. OK, if you are using the free system, you only can use 10 of those, but that's still pretty good. You also get free training to help you learn how to use your system. Now, this isn't some outdated video. These are classes taught by live, helpful people. You can ask all the questions you want. These are people that are making their living on the internet and are willing to volunteer their time to help others.

Even if you never upgrade, and just keep the free system, you can attend all the classes you want, which not only include lead generation, but also include search engine optimization and HTML, where you learn how to build web sites. You can take these skills and use them to make money on the internet, even if you never upgrade your system.

Now, if your main purpose for the system is to generate leads, great! That's the main purpose of Veretekk. You can keep the free system while you learn how to generate leads. You can keep it free while the leads start to trickle in. You can wait until you have figured out what to do and are generating a steady stream of leads everyday. Once you are ready, it's 42 dollars per month. But hold off on that until you are ready.

I've talked people in my downline out of upgrading. Even though it would be money in my pocket right now, I want these people to totally understand how to generate leads and have a steady stream coming in before they upgrade. That way I know that they'll be happy and stay with it longer.

If you company is a network marketing company like mine is, you might think that you need all kinds of sales skills and techniques to make money. That's not true. It's more important to know your company than it is to be able to close the sale and everything else that goes with sales.

All you need to be able to do is answer questions. If you've chosen a quality company, the info will make the sale.

I like to call my prospects and send them to a site with a video or two on it. Then I call them back and I answer any questions that they might have. All I have to do is know what is on the videos, know my company inside and out, and know the website.

This means that you'll have to do a little homework when you first join your company, but it will be worth it. You need to stay up on any new products or services, and all upgrades to the main website.

Like I said, the most important thing you can do is be able to answer questions. That means you need to become an expert on your company. You aren't selling your company, the company and the products sell themselves. You just need to seem competent. That means becoming an expert.

When you begin a home based business, it's important to choose a good company to represent. There's a lot of scams out there, and you don't want to be associating yourself with those types of businesses. When you talk to people, you want them to believe in both you and your company. Here's what to look for in a good company.

Avoid the "pre-launch" offers. If the company is in pre-launch, nobody is making any money and there isn't any guarantee that anybody will make money.
Choose a company that has been around for awhile. I want to know that the company will be there six months from now. I don't want to become known as the guy that keeps coming around telling people I've got something new. There are a lot of great companies that have been around for years. Mine has been doing business for over 30 years.
Make sure you like the product or service. If it isn't something you're going to use, then you're just wasting your money. Plus, make sure that the product is competitively priced. If the product is overpriced just so you can have a pay plan, the company isn't going to last long.

Look, there are a ton of scams out there, and there are a lot of great companies you can join. Make sure you do your homework before you join.

When you begin a home based business, you need to decide what keywords and keyword phrases are best for you business. Try to use 3 word phrases or longer to help narrow the field of competitors. Home business and leads are great keyword categories because so many people search for them, but there are also millions of websites that you are going to have to beat out for position. If you are trying to get to the top of the Google keyword search for Leads, you are going to have to beat out 276 million sites to get to the first page. A Google search of Home Business brings over 2 BILLION results. Try adding "how to" or "how do I" to your terms to help narrow down the field, plus using things like that is good because that's how people search for stuff.

I use two keyword tools to help me decide if my phrases are getting enough traffic each month to make it worth my while. Wordtracker is a free tool that gives you a daily total of how many times your phrase is being searched for. Good Keywords is a free tool that you download. It gives you the monthly volume.

I received an email asking about Google Adwords. I think when you begin a home based business, you need to keep the costs down. Adwords is a great program, but it can cost quite a bit. Plus, if you aren't generating sales, you aren't making any money.

You see, Adwords is best used for a retail type of situation. If you have a great looking site that entices people to buy your products, than it's not a bad idea. However, in network marketing, our pre-fab self replicating sites are designed to recruit people to join the business, not buy products.

People will join your business because of you, not because of your site or any advertising. It's called network marketing for a reason. We are networking. It's all about relationships. Most people join network marketing companies after they are exposed to it 6 or 7 times. I don't want to be paying to be the 3rd person to show them my site, only to have them go to someone else's site when they are ready to join. Plus, how many of you actually joined your program without talking to the person that was going to be your sponsor?

When you start an SEO campaign and your site begins to climb on Google, sometimes it just disappears. What has happened, is that Google has put it into it's sandbox. Don't let this scare you, especially if you are just beginning a home based business. You'll see it again.

What's happened, is that Google wants to have a real person take a look at your website. It's been crawled by the spiders, but now they want to check it out themselves. They want to make sure everything is on the up and up. Basically, they just want to make sure it isn't some spam site.

Now, it might take a month to six weeks to get out of the sandbox. Nobody really knows for sure. This site disappeared a couple of weeks ago and just barely reappeared. Keep in mind, the site doesn't actually disappear, it just won't show up in the search engines. If someone searches for it by name, they can still find it, and if you tell someone the address, it will still come up.

The important thing to remember, is that your site is still there, and all the work you are doing on it still counts. If it's a blog, keep posting. Keep putting out press releases and e-zine articles. Keep posting to forums and keep submitting it to Google everytime something changes. When the site reappears, all the work you've been doing will matter. Don't take the time off.

Once you know all the different ways to help your search engine positioning, it really comes down to 2 main keys. First - you always have to be keyword specific. When you begin a home based business, it's important to get your site where people can see it. You have to choose your keywords and phrases correctly and then you have to use them. You have to title your website correctly, you have to title your blog posts correctly, you must use your keywords throughout your site. This doesn't mean that you just keep repeating them over and over, but it does mean that you should use them.

The second key, is to consistantly work at it. Once you have a list of things you should be doing, you need to daily work your way through your list. If you have a blog, post to it every day. Train the search engine spiders to crawl your site. Put out a press release every day for the first two weeks of your site. Make it a goal to put out links every day. 5 links a day is 150 by the end of the month. If you used my Veretekk Free Page site to put out a page with links aiming back at your site every day, that would be 30 web sites aiming at your site at the end of the month. Don't forget to submit each site to Google.

Do a little bit every day, and over time that little bit adds up to a lot. Keep at it.

Linking is vitally important to search engine optimization. Search engine spiders like to see your site linked to others sites of the same type. I use various types of linking. You can pay for linking programs, but why? There are free sites that you can use. I'll tell you about one today. Linking is something you need to do when you begin a home based business.

The first major linking system I have, is a forum I started. When you start your own forum, you control everything. I have categories that no one else can post to. These I use for linking and seo. Or advertising. I have other categories that people can contribute to, but they need to be specific, like a blog category. People have to post about their blogs. Then I have the advertising categories where people can post anything they want. I do that do that there is constantly new material on the forum. It brings the spiders more often.

Here is my How To Make Money Online Forum. Feel free to contribute. I post all my press releases there and quite a few other things, all aimed back at various sites. This is a free forum, so I can't put any Google adsense on it, but I can put other things, like a clickable flash ad for my First Family Classified Ad Site. E-zines are an important part of search engine optimization. While I like to start out announcing a new website with a press release, and then following that up with a press release a day for two weeks, after that I like to write an E-zine article once a week. E-zines are electronic or online magazines.

E-zines articles differ from press releases in that they are longer and are more informative. There are two things you have to remember about E-zine articles. First, they still aren't ads. You are looking to inform without selling. Plus, articles that are obviously ads won't be accepted.

The second thing to remember about E-zine articles is to be original. Don't copy and paste. Don't steal someone else's ideas. Plagiarism can get you banned from article submission sites. Just don't do it.

Finally, here is a great E-zine article submission site. Make sure you know their requirements. Read a few articles to get a feel for what they are looking for. And always link back to the site that you're trying to get search engine positioning for.

I really like forums. The first reason is, I can use them to generate a lot of leads for my home business. I talk about that in my two lead generation blogs - Build A Huge Downline and MLM Lead Generation. The second reason I love forums, is because they really help with SEO.

You can find MLM and Network Marketing forums just by searching for them. You could also try Work At Home Mom forums. Make sure that you can put a link into your posts. If they don't allow that, then look elsewhere. Also, make sure that the forum is a high traffic forum. Lots of members, lots of posts that increase daily. A high traffic forum draws the search engine spiders because of all the fresh content. A slow forum does nothing to help you, so don't waste your time.

Also, make sure that the forum allows sig lines. Signature lines are a tiny little post that goes onto the end of all your posts. It's the one place that a little bit of advertising is OK. And by a little bit, I mean one short sentence. With a link. For example, I would include something like this in a sig line - Visit my blog to learn how to Begin A Home Based Business. See, just one short sentence with a link. No more or you could get kicked out of the forum.

Don't advertise in the body of your post. Find a thread and contribute to the conversation. Try to choose a thread that has gotten a few posts already. Remember, high traffic means new content which draws the spiders.

Go out and leave about 10 posts a day. Make them all unique. Also, try to post to as many different forums as possible. What you're doing here is creating links to your site. It's great if someone visits your site because of that, but what you're mainly doing is trying to increase your search engine positioning, which links do.

Look, if you only make 10 posts a day, that's 300 links in a month. All aimed back at your site. Make sure all your content is original. If it's not, the spiders won't look at it.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization. Learning how to get your content ranked high in Google is essential when you begin a home based business. I put my content out on the web 5 ways.

Static Websites.
Blogs.
Press Releases.
Forums.
E-Zine Articles.

I have a couple of static websites. These are sites that don't change much on a regular basis. I have an RSS feed hooked up to both of them, so that the content changes some, but I don't go in and changed it daily. I have this site and also this one.

I've talked about blogs before. They are great because you can go add content several times a day if you want, plus they are search engine friendly. Make sure you title them with your keywords and phrases.

What I really wanted to talk about today was press releases. Press releases are almost magical in how fast they hit the search engines. In fact, when I put up this site, I announced the site in a press release on a Friday, the same day I started the site. I had just put it up, but hadn't actually added any content to it, but I wanted to get the press release out. Then some family issues came up and I wasn't able to get back to my computer until Monday. I wanted to check to see how many websites I was up against, so I searched Google for the main phrase I've optimized this site for, Begin A Home Based Business. I was shocked to find my one press release on page one of Google in both the second and third position. I quickly got to work writing content.

Besides just getting up to the top of Google by themselves, if you use a service that lets you link to your site that you want to get position for, they pull that site up, also. To be honest, I wouldn't use a press release service if they don't let me link to my site. Right now, for the same search term, Begin A Home Based Business, this site has climbed to the second page of Google, in the 17th spot. That's out of 9, 450,000 sites. I've done that in just 24 days. I'm already getting calls. I love getting calls.

I like to announce my new website in a press release. I then continue putting out a press release every day for two weeks. Then I switch to E-zine articles.

The main press release service that I use is Free Press Release. However I prefer to pay the $1 for the premier press release and get a link. Another service that I haven't used yet, but I have heard is very good, is PR Log.

There are a few things to keep in mind about press releases. You set them up just like a website. The headline is like the title tag. Be very keyword specific here. The summary is like the meta description. This is two or three sentences using your keywords and phrases. And in the body of the press release, make sure to use your keywords and phrases. However, you write this like a newspaper article. Never say I or me. However, it is perfectly acceptable to quote yourself. Write the PR like you would if you were reporting about your website or service. You need to tell how your service will help people without making it like a sales pitch.

Remove anything like - you'll make 2,000 dollars dollars per day! (I actually received a phone call with a recording telling me that today). Here is a search of Free Press Release for my name, David Pearson. The first 5 are my press releases. I'm not sure why only those 5 show up. I have started a forum, and have included a press release section for myself as another link, so that the press releases will stay up in the search engines a little longer. Give the press releases a try. I've found them to be nothing short of miraculous.

How To Begin A Home Based Business

If you want to know how to begin a home based business, then you need to learn SEO. There are three keys to search engine optimization.

Title. Everything you create must be titled correctly. The title tag on your website. The title of your blog posts. The title of your press releases. The title of your E-zine articles. They shouldn't be cute. That doesn't help with the search engines. Your title tells the search engines where to put your site or content. I'm optimizing this site for Begin A Home Based Business. That's in my title tag, which is that line at the top of the page. It's in title of this and almost every post, in some way. Yes it's boring, but I'm writing for the search engine spiders. To see how I'm doing, here is the first page of the Google search for Begin A Home Based Business. I have press releases in the 2nd and 3rd positions on page 1.
Content. Your content should be original and full of your keywords and phrases. You don't need to repeat them over and over, but you need to put them in your content. And never copy and paste your content. The spiders will recognize this and your content will never be seen in the search engines.
Links. You should always be linking back to the sites that you are trying to get search engine positioning for. Here are a couple of press releases that link back to this site. Here and here. I also have a free forum that I use for linking. Here is a link to a post I did about this site. I use a system called Veretekk to generate leads for my business. One of the sites I get with that allows me to create an unlimited number of free pages that link back to the sites that I want them to, such as this one. Here is my free page site. Go ahead and use it. It's free for you too. Along with the Veretekk system that I pay for, I can also sign up for an unlimited number of systems to use for SEO. To push a site up the search engines, you need original keyword rich content, keyword rich titles and links to that site. Lots of links. Tons of links. Get to work!

So, you've started a blog. Now what do you fill it with? Anything. Everything. Just be keyword specific. Give people something to help them and give the search engine spiders something to eat. They eat keywords, by the way. You may have noticed in other posts that I use the phrases Begin A Home Based Business, Home Based Business Opportunity and Work At Home Mom a lot. Those are the keyword phrases that I've optimized the site for and that I'm trying to get position in the search engines for. Sometimes I also work in Be A Work At Home Mom, Work From Home Mom and Start A Home Based Business.

Give your readers a reason to come back. Give your readers a reason to call you. I love it when that happens. I like to get home from work (yes I still have a job) and have 3 or 4 messages on my voice mail. Pretty sweet. By the way, I don't have a cell phone. I don't like the idea of having a certain number of minutes when I can use the phone. I prefer the unlimited long distance that I get at home. That I can use during the day, week or un peak times.

Write about your business. Unless your company frowns on you describing their services (some companies do), write about your company. If your company doesn't want you to mention them specifically, talk about the benefits of their products.

Shaklee doesn't like their associates to mention their products by name. But people can write about hair and skin issues, drawing people that would be interested in Shaklee products to their site. My company, doesn't like to be mentioned unless I get permission first. That's ok. They're still a great company with great services. For example, one of their services helps prevent Identity Theft. I can make contacts on forums about that. I also get people calling me after seeing this site and asking me what my main business is. That's ok, too. And, just to quell any questions about my company. the reason they don't want their services and pricing to be written about, is because they are a little different state to state. It's a legal services company, so we're dealing with lawyers. It's a company that's been around as a network marketing company for over 30 years, so they must be doing something right.

The most important thing to remember about content: just create something. The more you create, the better the chances someone else has of finding you. Like you found me.

Writing.

Sometimes that word scares people. Whenever you begin a home based business, you write a lot. It's what's going to get you up on Google, however. Your writing determines lots of things. Your title on your website, blog post titles and press release titles determine where in Google you're going to end up. Your content effects this, plus it should offer solutions to the people that read it.

Don't be afraid of writing. If you don't think that you write well, that's ok. Just start writing and you'll improve. Remember, most of the content that you create will be aimed at the search engines, not people. You want to put out the best content you can for the people that read it, but you are mostly worried about the search engines. If people can't find you, they can't read you.

Always be free with your keywords and phrases. This tells the search engines where to put you.

You need to come to grips with the idea of writing. You're going to be writing a lot as we cover SEO. The content of your website, your blog, your press releases. It's all important and you're going to be generating a lot of it. However, you won't be doing it all at once. If you do a little every day, it all adds up. If you do one short post to a blog every day for a month, that's 30 entries. That makes the search engine spiders take notice. Once you pass 100, which is only a little over 3 months, you'll see a big increase in search engine positioning. Sometimes that happens in a few days, though.

Remember - the next 100 days, or 30 days, or 2 weeks will still pass whether you create content on a daily basis or not. Do you really want to be looking back wishing you'd done something, or do you want to be able to search for your keyword phrases in Google and have your site pop up?

The first step to getting ranked high in a Google search is to get indexed in Google. This is really the first step once your site is up. Now, when you just begin a home based business, there are a lot of people that are willing to take advantage of you. I've heard of people charging as much as $249 to index your site with Google. That's very generous of them considering it's a free service that you can do yourself in less than a minute.

First off, here is the Google Index Link. This is where the people who want you to pay them to do this go. Now, copy your entire URL including the http part and paste it into the line that says URL. On the next line, Comments, add your keywords and phrases. Add your name, also. Next, type in the word that you see there so that Google knows you aren't a submission program. They won't index you if you are. Finally, click Add URL.

That's it. It might take a few days or it might take a few weeks, but now your site will be indexed by Google. Here's another tip. All the search engines eventually take their content from Google. You don't have to submit to all the tiny little search engines.

Now that you've got your site up, you need to start thinking about getting it seen. I'm not going to touch on pay-per-click, which is where you buy keyword advertising and when someone searches for your keyword, they get a bunch of ads to look at on the side of the page, one of which will be yours. This can be expensive, and I'm cheap. Plus, I don't like the idea of paying for a click and not being guaranteed a sale.

That means the search engines. SEO. Search engine optimization. This is not a quick process, but there is nothing better than being at the top of the search engines when somebody searches for something. Plus, nobody really pays that much attention to the ads on the sides of the screen. I don't, I head for the first few sites that are listed.

When you first started to begin a home based business and were setting up your site, hopefully you were making sure that you had your keywords and phrases in the title tag and meta tags (you did do some keyword research before setting up the site, didn't you?).

Now, the thing you want to concern yourself with most, is content. You need to be daily updating the content on your site. If the search engine spiders check your site and don't find new relevant content, they will think that the site is stagnant. Then they will wait longer before coming back. This moves your site down in the rankings.

If the search engine spiders find new content, your site moves up and the spiders check back more often. This is why blogs do so well on the search engines. They are easy to update. I have my main site, plus several blogs that link to my main site. The blogs get ranked where people can find my info, then they find my main site through the blogs. Yesterday I talked about the title tag. Today I want to talk about the meta tags. This is code that is in your website that nobody but the search engine spiders see. If you are building your own website, the code is easily found just by searching "meta tags html". There are two types of meta tags: keywords and description. Use them both. The keywords are those keywords that you originally found. The description is 2-3 sentences made up of keyword phrases.

In a free blog service like this, they usually have a way to add the meta tags in the back office. In Blogger you just click on customize to get to your back office, then click on edit html. Unless you know what you are doing, don't mess with the html. However, this is easy stuff. Just don't change anything else. The title, which is the title tag, is just under the HEAD. There will be something in it already, but get rid of that and put in your new title. Don't remove *title> or */title>, You need those as part of the code. The next two section are the meta description and meta keywords for this blog.

Let's start getting your site ready. I'm not going to touch on content beyond saying that you want original content that features your keywords and phrases. Original is the key. If you just borrow(steal) someone else's content word for word, or just copy and paste it, the search engine spiders will be able to tell and you'll never get ranked in the search engines. Offer good, relevant content that helps someone solve a problem that they might have.

Title tag. Make sure you have one beyond what might come with your site. This is how your site will be listed in the search engines. It's what people will see. I like to feature my name and the main purpose of the site. You find the title tag at the very top line of your browser. This site's title tag is "David Pearson Presents How To Begin A Home Based Business Opportunity". I like my name to be featured because I am trying to push myself onto the first page of google for David Pearson which is not as easy as you would think. There are nascar drivers, football players, artists, silent movie actors, writers and professors with my name. After my name I try to feature my keywords. For this site I am using two phrases. "Begin A Home Based Business" and "Home Based Business Opportunity".

Here is something to keep in mind when developing your site. It is more important to design it for the search engines than it is to design it for people. That means that good relevant content featuring your keywords and phrases is more important than cool flash presentations, music and pictures. The spiders pick up none of that. And if they don't see it, and your site isn't getting ranked high enough for anyone to find, nobody will see how great your site is.

Content over flash. Every time.

Once you have your site, you need to decide how to use it. What are you going to do with it. what is the purpose of it.

You could just make it a billboard for your opportunity. You might actually have a little success with that, but you are limiting yourself to people searching for just that type of opportunity.

The thing is, blatant advertising just isn't that effective on the internet. We've all grown to accustomed to it. We don't generally log onto the internet to buy something we've seen in an advertisement. We log on to find answers to our questions.

When I was putting out little ads for my business in all the online classified ad sites and forum, I had no success at all. When I stopped doing that and started putting out ads for my Veretekk traffic portals, like my ad blaster and my classified ad site, I started generating a bunch of great mlm leads. I have much more success with those than I ever did waiting for someone to see my ad for my business.

In fact, I've gotten many more calls about this "Begin A Home Based Business" website and my lead generation websites than I ever did before just advertising. With this site I'm helping people. I'm giving useful suggestions to people just getting started in network marketing. With my lead generation sites I help people learn how to generate leads for their business.

You need to decide what to do with your website, be it one that you own, or a free blog like this. Once you've decided, you can take the keywords and phrases that you looked up earlier and put them to use.

So now you have a domain. Now you need to do something with it. You can get a free blog and forward your domain to it, but I recommend having at least one website that is totally yours. You also should have your own name domain. Unfortunately for me, there are a ton of David Pearson's out there, so I went with a business website name. PearsonConnection.com. That's where you'll find out about what businesses I'm involved in. I also forward the domains DavePearson.info and DavePearson.org to that website. I have another website that is totally mine. How to make money online.

The reason I like to use blogs, is that they are easier to update, plus they are easier to get to the top of the search engines. This blog - Begin A Home Based Business is climbing on Google. Because a good blog is being updated several times a week, there is constantly changing content. That means that the search engine spiders crawl the site more often, and finding new content, they tend to bump the site up the rankings.

Whether you go with your own site, or a free one, the key to getting your home based business opportunity to the top of the search engines is constantly changing content. You don't need to change your whole site every day, but it is good to have something changing often. Perhaps a Tip of the Day or something like that you update using your keywords and phrases.

Ok, yesterday I talked about domain names. Now, lets talk about sub domains. This really isn't something you need to worry about when you just begin a home based business, but it is something to keep in mind when purchasing domain names.

Like I said yesterday, I buy my domain names from GoDaddy. They cost me about 9 bucks for a whole year, less if you get it for more years. But what makes it such a great deal, is when you buy them from GoDaddy, you also get 90 sub domains per domain. I have no idea if this is possible with other domain sellers. By the way, I learned this technique in a Veretekk training class.

I have a domain called AGreatMLMLead.com. I don't have a dedicated site for it. However, I do forward it to my MLM Lead Generation site. It gives me another domain that I can submit to Google in hopes of search engine positioning. I mask it, which is something GoDaddy lets me do. What this allows me to do, is put in a separate title tag, meta tag description and meta tag keywords, basically making it a separate site from the one I'm forwarding it to.

Now, here's where the sub domains come into play. I haven't actually done this with that domain, but I will be doing it in the future. I can create 90 sub domains of AGreatMLMLead.com. For example, I could create MLMLeadGeneration.AGreatMLMLead.com. Because the keywords I'm optimizing that site for are MLM Lead, MLM Leads and MLM Lead Generation, I can create 90 variations, all aiming back to the same site, yet all with unique title tags,
meta tag descriptions and meta tag keywords. That way, 1 domain name gives me 91 ways to attack the search engines. All for about 9 bucks. What a great way to publicize your home based business opportunity.

When you go to purchase a domain name, make sure you get sub domains with it. A 5 dollar domain might seem like a bargain, but it doesn't beat 91 for 9 dollars.

The Importance Of Domain Names.

Now, you're ready to start your website - almost. First you need the domain name. The domain name is literally the web address of your site. It is important to choose a good name because the domain name effects search engine optimization. This is equally important, whether you buy your own domain and get your own website, or if you use a free service like Blogger, like I'm doing here. By the way, Blogger is a Google function.

Look at the domain name for this site. Begin-a-home-based-business-2.blogspot.com. The blogspot.com is Blogger's domain. The rest of it is my subdomain. I'll cover subdomains in tomorrow's post.

If you've done your keyword phrase homework, coming up with a good domain name should be pretty easy. And yes, putting your keywords in your domain really helps your SEO.

Here are a couple of the domains that I have and what I do with them.

Begin-a-home-based-business-2.blogspot.com is a free domain. Begin A Home Based Business was already taken, so I just added a 2 to it. I also like the dashes between the words. Other things I do to already taken domains is add Today or Now to give the domain a sense of urgency. Begin A Home Based Business is a keyword phrase I am targeting.

Be-A-Work-At-Home-Mom.com is a domain that I own. The keyword phrase for that domain is Work At Home Mom. I don't have a website for that domain. What I'm doing, is masking it, which is where I give it it's own title tag keywords and keyword description. I then forward it to this website, where it gives me another domain that I can put into the search engines.

PearsonConnection.com is my personal site where people can learn a little about what I'm involved in. I'm paying for the site itself. It's not all that important whether or not you use free sites, such as this, but you should have your own site somewhere, where people can learn about you. And if you are going to need a store front, then you will need your own site for that, rather than just a domain.

Ok, you've chosen a good company and you've done your homework. You know your company and the products or services inside and out. What now? You need to start telling people about your opportunity. I'm not going to cover talking to people one on one. I'm sure your company has tons of training on that.

That leaves two options. Leads and SEO. You can buy leads or generate your own. I think buying leads is worthless. I cover that in a post in my MLM Lead Generation Blog in this post. I use a system called Veretekk to generate leads for my business. I also do SEO, or search engine optimization.

SEO is where you have a website or blog such as this, and using a variety of techniques, try to get it to the top of Google for certain keywords. This generates the best type of lead. The motivated lead that is actually looking for you.

The first thing you need to do, is take a look at your company and it's products or services and decide what keywords you want to focus on. The keyword or phrase that first comes to mind my not be what you ultimately go with. Here is a good tool to help you. Home business might seem like a great keyword phrase to go after, and it is. Just not to begin with. It gets a lot of searches, but there are so many sites out there that for a beginner it's darn near impossible.

For this site I'm going after 3 sets of phrases. I choose phrases over single words because it narrows down the competition. Business is just to broad, and home business is still way to big. I'm going after Begin A Home Based Business, Work At Home Mom, and Home Based Business Opportunity. The first two get enough searches to be worth the trouble, while the competition isn't so stiff. The third, Home Based Business Opportunity has tons of competition. I'm shooting for the first two while slowly working on the third.

See how I named the site after one of my phrases? This helps in the search engines. This is why you want to have a plan before you get going. I have one site, Build A Huge Downline. It's all about lead generation. Unfortunately you don't know that by the title. I thought I was being clever. But there isn't enough searches for downline or build a huge downline. I've changed the title tags and metatags, but I'm still having trouble getting it to the top of the search engines, even though I have over 120 posts to the site. It has great content, though, so check it out.

Once you figure out the keyword phrases you want to target, get yourself a site. Ultimately you want one with your name, but you'll find that you don't really want one with the name of the company in it. Promote yourself, not the company. You never know how long you'll be with the company. Look at this site. It contains great content about home based business. I'm helping people solve their problems. I can change companies and the site won't have to change. I'm not planning on leaving my main business, because it's a great company. But, you never know.

Ok, once you have chosen the company you want to do business with, you need to learn that company. Become an expert in your company. Learn everything you can about the company, the products or services and the website.

I know all the "lingo". "We aren't selling the company, we're sharing the opportunity" with people. We just "mention it". Hand out DVDs - "be the messenger, not the message". This is all just semantics. Most people don't like to hear this, but network marketing is sales. We are selling the service or product. We are selling the company. We are selling ourselves. I don't know about you,but I've never worked in sales. I currently work for the US Postal service(please, no jokes, I've heard them all). The closest I've come to sales is in high school when I worked at KFC, and believe me, asking if someone wants biscuits with that isn't sales.

Here's the thing. I'm not a closer. I don't know how to be a high powered salesman. I do know the company, it's products and the website. Spend the time to learn these things and learn them well. All you want to be able to do is answer questions. If you can describe the pay plan, the services and help someone navigate around the site, what more is there? Plus, when you're just beginning a home based business, you can always call someone in your upline to help out. They aren't going to go find people for you. That isn't there job. They are supposed to be there to help out when you get someone interested.

It doesn't take a lot of time to learn your company. A work at home mom can print out the catalog and take it with her. If you work, learn it on your lunch break. Get up 30 minutes early and watch the dvd's, listen to the cd's. Wander through the site and get comfortable with it. A week or two of that and you'll be an expert.

So, go learn your company!

Ok, step 1 when you begin a home based business - choosing the right home based business opportunity. Which company are you going to align yourself with?

You're going to hear a bunch of stuff when you're looking for a network marketing company. Here is where the old saying comes into play. "If it sounds too good to be true...". Look, if someone is promising to make you a millionaire by next month, run away.

If someone says that all you have to do is push a button, or they will do all the work for you, run away. You're going to have to work. You'll work harder than you do at the regular job that you're trying to get rid of. It's your business. Nobody's going to work it but you. I talked to a man a few months ago. He had come across a website of mine and gave me a call. He was looking for a way to generate leads for his business. The site he came across talked about something called Veretekk. It's the system I use to generate leads. It's great, but I'll talk about that in another post. He asked me this question. After I join, will it just generate leads for me, or will I have to sit and work at my computer. When I said that he would actually have to put some time into it, he said, oh, well I'm looking for something that's a little more hands free. We said goodbye and I've never heard from him again. I hope he found the magic button he was looking for, but I doubt it. There is no such thing.

When someone tells you that something is free and you'll never have to pay a dime, they're lying. There is no free lunch, somebody has to pay. I'm going to use Veretekk as an example again. It is free to sign up. The training is free. You can keep your free system forever and never pay a dime. What that means, is that while you learn the system, while you attend all the free training you want, while you get the whole thing working for you, it's free. But. But when you actually want to get the leads that you have been generating, you need to upgrade. Like I said, I will explain how I generate leads in another post. But, nothing is ever free.

Stay away from the scams. In network marketing, if there is no product or service, it's a scam, and illegal. If the whole idea is to hand money to the person who told you about it, and then you have to get 3 people to give you money, it's a scam. In a real network marketing company, you get something of value for your money. And yes, Roadmap to Riches is a scam, even though you get a website for $997. All that website does is ask people for $997. Good luck with that. I guess it's enticing, because I keep running into people that have fallen for it.

Now, this is important. If you ever hear of a "Pre-Launch", run away. They'll tell you you can get in on the ground floor, before anyone else. That's true, but it also means that nobody is getting paid and nobody knows if anyone will ever get paid.

Which leads me back to the topic - How do you choose your business? The same way you would in the brick and mortar world.

You choose a good, solid company that has been around for years and has a great track record. You don't want to be starting over every 6 months.
The company has a great product line, or a great service. Something that you would want to buy even if there was no pay plan involved with it. But, if the product is overpriced, just so there can be a pay plan, run away.
Also, choose your upline. If you find a company you want to be part of, but aren't sure of the person that contacts you, look around. You have every right to find someone you think is going to teach you the ropes.

There are a lot of great network marketing companies out there. Whatever company you choose, make it a good one. Like I said before, nobody wants to be starting over in 6 months.

Welcome! I know it's hard to make money in network marketing. 95% of all people involved in network marketing lose money. That's right. Only 5% make money. I make money and so can you.

I was given a bit of a shock today. I had gotten the site up and running a few days ago, but I hadn't been planning on starting it until tomorrow. However, I wanted to know how long it took me to get some mention of the site onto page 1 of a Google search. So I searched Begin a Home Based Business, because I also wanted to know how many sites I was up against. I was a little startled to learn that I was on page 1 in the number 2 spot. You see, I put out a press release a couple of days ago and there it was. The screen shot was taken on October 8th, 2007. Click the screen shot. Pat on the back for me.

Oh, there were 45.6 Million other websites in that search. I point that out because there is nothing special about me. Someone showed me how to get listed on Google. Now I know how to do it. I'll be showing you how to do it also.

There are three major factors to making money with a home based business.

Choosing the right company.
Leads - without prospects, you can't grow.
Promoting your business.

I'll be covering all 3 of those. They are all equally important. Without a quality company, nobody will want to join your home based business opportunity. Without leads, there is nobody to join you. Without promotion(SEO, calling your leads), nobody will be able to find you to join you.
